THE NIGERIA PRIZE FOR SCIENCE COMPETITION - GUIDELINES
A reconstituted Committee for The Nigeria Prize for Science met at Eko Hotel and Suites, Lagos, on 25th February 2005 to review the award.
The committee after an exhaustive deliberation adopted the guidelines for the award of science prize as stipulated in the 2004 award guidelines with two additions.
The two additions are a further provision that each nominee should enclose six copies of his/her entry and that no member of the award committee should nominate a person or be nominated for the award.
Receiving of entries for the 2005 contest formally ended on March 31, 2005.
GUIDELINES
Eligibility
  • The award is open to all scientists (Nigerians and non-Nigerians alike) who are resident and working in Nigeria, and whose works have made great impact in their areas of specialization.
  • The work must be of outstanding merit and would have advanced the frontiers of knowledge and/or provided a solution to a major scientific problem of national relevance.
  • The material for consideration for the award must not have been submitted for any other award in the year under consideration.
Call for nominations
  • The call for nominations would be made early in the year with a closing date of 31st March every year for the receipt of nominations at the Secretariat of the Nigerian Science Prize.
    The nomination process:
  • Applications shall be called for from the general public. Candidates for The Nigerian Prize for Science should be nominated on prescribed forms by persons who are in their area of specialty. In other words, there should be a relationship between the candidate’s area of specialisation and the professional background of the nominator.
  • Direct application for the Prize from candidates would as much as possible be discouraged. However, in exceptional cases, persons of outstanding merit who have not been nominated by any person may forward an application on behalf of self.
  • Nominators may nominate more than one person in the same field for consideration for a joint award.
  • No member of the award sub-committee or panel of judges can nominate or be nominated by any person for the award in the year they are serving in the various committees of the award.
Appointment of judges
  • A panel of five (5) judges would be selected for The Nigerian Prize for Science.
  • The appointment of judges will be done in a way that reflects and represents the various branches of science. Persons to be appointed as judges must be those who have wide experience, public recognition, good public image, and command respect nationally and internationally.
